Tell us what you think...

We are here to discuss our Social Networking sites (MySpace, FaceBook, etc...) so tell us what you don't like, do like, and why you like it. Explore these sites and we will all talk about our experiences.

  2. Lets see, I do not have alot of experience with Facebook, or myspace. But from what I do know they are very easy to use. On the downside I have seen alot of people that seem to be addicted to it.

  3. I had a myspace account and loved it. I had to cancel it because someone hacked in and changed my password and my personal info. I love to look for people.

  4. I have a myspace account and Im addicted to a point of codependance. I use it to keep in contact with my friends in family spanning from alaska, washington state, california, las vegas, new york, hawaii, florda, arizona... you get the point. The fact that I can see pictures of my best friend's new born daughter or track down someone I havent seen since grade school are peak advantages in my eyes. I generally use my account like my email but in a superior manner it offers so many other facets I'd almost say it completely overshadows the importance of needing an email [well unless you need to get ahold of someone who doesnt have a myspace, but really, who doesnt these days?] Where I think myspace dwarfs other social networks is simply in the vast amount of users. Sure, its common to have a facebook or something along those lines but quite frankly the amount of people that I know that have a face book is easilly 1/20 of the people who are users of myspace.

  5. I can understand why MySpace is so poular. I actually got addicted for a while because I was talking to so many of my friends so often. I like the fact that I can put up songs and pictures to express who I am and how I'm feling. It is a great way to waste some time and stay in touch, but and this is JMHO, there are some downsides.
One of the first I wanted to discuss is the fact that anyone can track you down. i was reminded of this fact when one of my ex-girlfriends from high school contacted me with a very sarcastic and rude message. People sometimes forget that these things are not anon.

  6. FYI...
I wanted to lay out a couple of points of order for this board. Please keep it civil people. No flaming, respect others opinions (like if they hate a site you love), and just try to remember that we are going to be seeing each other quite a bit.
I will delete any comments that are horribly offensive, but I don't plan to censor you in any way. Express your opinions, try to stay on topic, and if you need to argue a point don't make it personal.

  7. I haven't been on in a while because I have actually been checking out some of these other social networking sites.
PlentyofFish.com is interesting although I have never been a big believer in internet dating. I figured that for the sake of our blog I would go ahead and check it out. There are some nice people but it is like any other networking site, you need to put yourself out there and message away.
I also signed into a blogging community, that I can't remember the name of right now, this site is actually done with webcams, everyone answers and communicates with eachother on messengers and myspace, but you can go and watch the person you are talking to. Not really my thing, but it is interesting.
MySPace.com is still as addictive as ever, I have spent far too much time talking to friends on here and am planning to scale my use back asap.
Finally, we are seriously lacking posts here people. Surely you can think of something to say about these sites...we are goinmg to recieve a grade based on how well we have been using these blogs and right now we aren't blogging away...Remember, this is am open forum, say anything you want! If something pisses you off then rant about what it is and what should be done. If you love something, then tell us what it is and why. Come on people, I know we are all busy but give it a shot...

  8. i also have a facebook account but i dont get on it as much as my myspace, it is less of an attention getter

  9. I have music sites where it comes in handy, like datpiff.com, where you can blog about diff/ songs or mixtapes and the djs

  10. i am affiliated with so many more of these types of websites and become a normal member by socializing with every other member of the same network

  11. I have used myspace a little but have not become very familiar with all of its features. There are even some strange sites like Okcupid.com, which is a dating site, with some different tests and quizzes made by members.

  12. Ih ave a facebook account and it is fun to see or talk with people you went to school with. But Idont think it is user friendly like myspace. There is alot more you can do on myspace as far as features and meeting all kinds of people.

I know what you mean about the specific type sites...they add another layer to the social networking experience. I am a member of some music sites and some filesharing networks, blogs, etc...I really enjoy being able to meet up with people that have similar intrests and like to discuss the files that we are downloading. If anyone here is interested in music, movies, books, ANYTHING AT ALL then they should hit up some of these specialized sites. Not only do they make it much easier to find the files you want, but they allow you to talk to people that are into it. If there is something you really want and can't find, then simply ask some one on the board or site and most likely they will be able to help. Get out there and explore people, enjoy all the different types of social networking sites out there...

  14. IMPORTANT PLEASE READ:

Everyone needs to start responding to other peoples posts. This is a discussion blog, we need to interact, believe me that it will make this much more interesting and this is what is expected of us. So, find a post that intrests you, one you can relate to, or simply something you don't agree with. Respond to it! It is a good idea to copy their post and include it in yours so that everyone will know what you are talking about.

  15. What does everyone think about the moral/ethical issues that come along with these social networking sites? What about this guy that molested the 30 kids from one high school? What about the privacy issues? Is there such a thing as privacy on these sites? What do you think should be done to make the web safer, or do you think it is the person surfings responsibilty to protect themselves? Let's hear what you have to say...This is a major issue to do with these social networking sites so speak your mind...

You can enter the schools you attended on MySpace and do basically the same thing. I never got into Facebook. I had an account but when I broke up with an ex-girlfriend of mine who used it a lot I just stopped using it. I need to get back on now because it is the social networking site that my older sister in California uses. These sites are annoying some times, but they really do help us to stay in touch...

  17. There is a site called plentyoffish it is a dating site for free. You will meet some strange people having different wants and needs. It is actually funny to read some of there postings of themselves. You can be on the site and someone will want to chat with you if you choose not to speak to that person you can block them from ever talking to you.

  18. Even though it is a great to have the ability to communicate worldwide with these websites, there are some problems with using them. The most common issue I see is when someones post is misinterpreted and is blown out of preportion, thereby offending many by a simple miscommunication.

Anyone ever had any problems like this when using these websites?

Oh yeah, people can't hear your intent so things can easily be misunderstood. There are also those people out there who are looking to fight for no reason at all. They are referred to as flamers or jack*sses, or a few other names I can't mention here...in any case, you have to be careful how you express yourself and be sure not to let yourself get involved in pointless fights.

I actually joined PlentyofFish for this project. It has been an interesting experience, I really didn't get into it though. I searched around and have messaged back and forth with one woman who seems interesting and has similar intrests to me, it might go somewhere. Internet dating is good if you are busy or have trouble in social situations, but I prefer the tried and true method of going out and meeting people. It is a lot more fun to "interface" with someone right in front of you and if this weekend was any indicator, I don't think I need to go to internet dating just yet.

What does evryone think of internet dating? Is this a good alternative to parties/bars or whatever or is internet dating too false and unreliable? Anyone have any good experiences with dating online?

  21. I just remembered that I had my own story of meeting someone over the net. We met through a mutual friend on MySpace and began messaging each other, within a week we were calling each other every day and everything was going really well.
She lived out of state and I traveled to stay with her, we had fun and it was a decent relationship but there was always something awkward about it...I think that may have just been her though, she seemed different after we met in person, but that could be my own perception of her. In talking and chatting so much before we met I think I had built up in my mind who I wanted her to be, and I don't mean looks. I don't know if you can really get to know someone without actually meeting them. What do you guys think?

  22. In order to have a wider experience with Social Networking Sites I went out and joined a few new ones. I was already a MySpace member and I have a facebook that I really need to check, but I joined a site called Stickam.com that allows users to chat and see each other in real time using web cams (an interesting site, worth checking out), I joined the site PlentyofFish.com (discussed in a post of mine above), I joined a site created for my Creative Writing class that uses WetPaint an interesting type of message board that allows all the members to go in and make changes, you can create posts, pages, and really take an active role in the site.

Did anyone else go out and join new sites? What experiences did you have with the ones you visit? Has the way you look at Social Networking Sites changed at all because of this discussion?

I haven't ever explored Yahoo's networking options other than their e-mail and IM, and I haven't even used their Instant Messenger in a while. Glad you said something about that because I was actually thinking about doing more with my account, but now I think I might just save the time and effort.

  25. I have tried Yahoo's networking stuff too, and had my own share of problems. Of course nothing compares to the horrors of America Online. I never had so many problems with my computer until after I started using their program. I hope in the future networking sites get a little better in privacy, and protection but I doubt it.

I never enjoyed using Aol Instant Messenger that much, and now that I think about it, it was around the time I was using AIM that my computer got so bogged down by viruses and spyware that I had to take it in to a shop to get fixed.

  27. Overall Social Networking Sites Conclusion:
PlentyofFish really wasn't a great site. I actually deleted my account, but a big part of that was that I started dating someone, who by the way I did not meet on POF. Online dating may work for some, but I prefer the tried and true method of going out and meeting people.
MySpace is a solid site, good for talking to friends and networking. It does have it's drawbacks though, it is plagued by spyware, malware, and viruses. I like it, but I am starting to use Facebook a lot more.
Stickam was interesting but seemed to be populated by mostly underage and strange/disturbing people. I would avoid it and I will be deleting my account ASAP.
Facebook is my site of choice. I am getting in contact with people that I haven't seen in years and they are responsible professionals. Facebook seems to be the site of choice for adults, professionals, and families.

  28. After trying this over the month, I have to admit I have been looking at networking sites the wrong way. Before I thought that useing one of these sites was nothing but a waste of time, but after seeing the possiblitys of communitcation, I see that they are indeed the newest form of meeting people. I still think that talking to people face to face is better for relationships, networking sites do allow you to meet millions of people with similar interests from everywhere around the world.
